Deliberately different, deliberately relevant
Progress under pressure
We are working with young people, in particular Black young people, at a time when progress that took years to build is under real pressure. The wider social and political climate has, in places, moved backwards rather than forwards.
Alternative provision cannot respond to this moment with a conventional offer. It needs to be deliberately different, and deliberately relevant to the young people it serves.
Engagement is a response to relevance
Traditional classroom delivery does not reach every young person, and for many of the young people referred to Summit AP, it hasn't.
What we've found is that engagement isn't a fixed trait, it's a response to relevance. A young person who won't settle into a formal English lesson will readily plan a protein rich weekly menu to support their own training in our on site gym.
That single task produces evidence across English (planning, literacy), Maths (nutritional values, portioning), PSHE and health education, not as a workaround, but as a genuine, mappable route to the same outcomes.
What this looks like in practice
- Gym and nutrition sessions mapped to core curriculum outcomes
- Hands-on making and design activities that build confidence
- Real evidence recorded for every learner, every placement
- A relationship based approach that starts with the young person
What Summit AP is working towards
Respond to the moment
Challenge low expectations
Deliver core outcomes differently
Generate trusted evidence
Stay responsive
How we put our aims into practice
- Use gym based and nutrition focused activity as a structured route to English, Maths and PSHE outcomes, with evidence mapped and recorded for each learner.
- Build referral and partnership relationships with schools and commissioners based on demonstrated outcomes, not just attendance figures.
- Continue developing practical, skills based learning routes (including CAD/CAM and 3D printing) that reflect how our learners actually engage.
- Regularly review our approach against the current needs of young people, particularly young Black people, in the current social and political climate.
- Maintain the same safeguarding led, relationship based standards across all activity, however non traditional the format.
